Armando Balboni lived and worked in Springfield, Massachusetts until his passing. During his career as an artist he was also a Professor of Art at UMass Amherst.
Balboni was enamored by the work of Leonard Baskin, a professor/artist who taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College in Northampton, Ma and at Hampshire College in Amherst, Ma.
Much of Balboni’s work tended to be dark, but there were periods of light.
The untitled piece we have is, as Balboni’s many others of the same period, watercolor with wax on handmade paper. This piece (Untitled) — a ram with a rose, was atypical of his use of pastel colors and was painted during a period of his “theme of roses”.

Elaine Cunningham studied at the Duncan of Jordonstone College of Art & Design in Dundee, Scotland. She has shown her work extensively in Ireland, Scotland, England and Switzerland, and her paintings grace public and private collections in both Europe and the United States. “I have lived most of my life near the sea,” says Ms. Cunningham. “It is very close to my heart and is a constant influence on my painting.” Her seascapes are dramatically windswept and dark. She utilizes a wide range of materials, including oil paint, charcoal and watercolor. Her “Grey Day, Arbroath” is an oil painting selected for the show.

Rudolph Helmut Sauter studied art in London and Munich. Illustrated a definite edition of works by the novelist John Galsworthy, his uncle, whom he also drew in 1927. Showed at RA, RI, the Pastel Society and in the provinces; in Paris at the Salon where he gained an Honorary Mention. Had one man shows in London and New York. National Portrait Gallery, Royal West of England Academy and Ferens Art Gallery, Hull holds examples of his work.
Imperial War Museum hold five letters (18pp) written to his wife between August 1918 and 1919 while he was an internee in Alexandra Palace camp, north London, and Frith Hill camp at Frimley, Surrey, describing (in rather flowery language) his accommodation in the camps, his fellow internees, their reactions to news of the Armistice in November 1918 and prospective return to Germany, and his own thoughts on the war and on the separation from his family (Rudolf Sauter was a nephew of the novelist John Galsworthy, and a writer and artist of some repute).

Dawyck Haig, the second Earl Haig, who has died aged 91, spent a lifetime struggling to decide whether he was primarily a fine modern painter or the son of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, Britain’s commander-in-chief in the First World War. After an early breakdown, his psychoanalyst recommended that Dawyck should concentrate on his painting.
This he did, and he began exhibiting soon after the Second World War. He had his first London exhibition at the Redfern Gallery in 1949 and at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh the same year. It was not until 1956, however, when one of his portraits was sold at auction at Christie’s along with works by Rubens, Rembrandt, Hogarth and Reynolds, that he really made his name as an artist. Later, he occasionally sold works to the royal family. The Duke of Edinburgh bought one for £750, but admitted it had been on behalf of the Queen, because “I can’t afford to buy pictures.” Haig’s work is now in the collections of the Arts Council and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and last year a retrospective of his work, Haig at Ninety, was held at the Scottish Gallery.
Haig’s split personality was not helped by living for most of his life at Bemersyde, a 14th-century house near Melrose in the Scottish borders that, although it had been in the Haig family for 800 years, was purchased from a cousin for his father by a grateful nation in 1921, along with 1,500 acres. Dawyck was the 30th laird, and although he considerably altered it, Bemersyde remained museum-like, dominated by his father’s First World War mementoes, including the flag on his staff car. Dawyck painted in the room that he thought of primarily as having been his father’s writing room.
He could never get rid of the shadow cast by his father, partly because he spent so much of his life defending the first earl’s reputation against “mudslingers” such as Roy Jenkins alleging that the field marshal had sent men needlessly to their deaths in attacks at Passchendaele and the Somme. In 1991, he denounced as “poisonous trash” the accusation by Denis Winter that Field Marshal Haig’s promotions were due to his friendship with homosexual patrons such as Lords Kitchener and Esher, who also helped falsify war records. He divided his spare time between organizations such as the Earl Haig Fund, the Commonwealth Ex-Services League, the Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland and the Scottish Arts Council. He sold his father’s papers for £500,000, but even this did not exorcise him.

Sir William MacTaggart was born in Loanhead, near Edinburgh. In 1918 began to study at the Edinburgh College of Art, later studied in France and Italy. First exhibited at the RSA in 1921. Founder member of 1922 Group. In 1924 MacTaggart had a one-man show in Cannes. Exhibited at the Connels and T&R Annan and Sons, Glasgow, Aitken Dott, Edinburgh and Stone Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne and many other public and private galleries. Knighted in 1962. Tate Gallery, Arts Council of Great Britain, Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Royal Academy, Harrogate Museum, Bradford Museum, Glasgow Museum and Laing Art Gallery, many other British and overseas art collections hold his work.
