MOMS DE MAYO Art Show & Wine Tasting
Friday, May 9, 4:30-6pm
Newport, R.I., April 7, 2025 – Newport Wine Cellar & Gourmet and Gallery Sitka® announce the next monthly “2nd Fridays/All You Need is Art & Wine” celebration. The upcoming show on Friday, May 9 from 4:30-6pm is themed “Moms de Mayo,” a solo show for Susan Wadsworth.
This reception will be held at Newport Wine Cellar & Gourmet’s The Tasting Room located adjacent to the flagship shop at 5 Merton Road, Newport. “All You Need is Art & Wine” is free and open to all.
Gallery Sitka®, in permanent residence at The Tasting Room, adorns the walls with contemporary art, rotating exhibits, and monthly artist-attended opening receptions.
Gallery Sitka® owner Tamar Russell Brown, states, “We are hosting the reception on May ninth – in between Cinco de Mayo and Mothers’ Day – conflating the two for maximum enjoyment. And it just so happens that Gallery Sitka represents an artist who perfectly fits with that vibe. Susan Wadsworth has enjoyed periods of both colorful landscapes as well as “childscapes,” as she calls them, in her artistic career. Perfect for a vibrant Cinco de Mayo/Mothers’ Day solo show mash-up.“
Susan M. Wadsworth’s specialty is modern abstraction, inspired by where she lives and visits. A retired Fitchburg State professor, Susan taught studio art and art history; presented over three dozen papers; and published over one hundred art reviews. In her work, she has been inspired by landscapes, especially the rolling hills of New England; at first, focusing on small shapes then broader landscapes.
Susan Wadsworth shares, “Inspired by the birth of my third child, I began to create “childscapes,” or life from my/the mother’s point of view. When my children outgrew the limits of the “childscapes,” I returned to abstracted landscapes inspired by my travels. After visiting China and Japan numerous times, I began to integrate the use of black ink with my pastels. I layer pastel and then outline the basic shapes, and textures in pencil or ink, varying the use of lines. I’m inspired by the simplicity of the forms and layered textures echo the energy and rhythms of daily life, the mood being peaceful yet energized.”
All are invited to experience the new space and fine products at The Tasting Room, an extension of NWC&G’s select artisanal wines and specialty foods. Newly added home decor is furnished by LBD Designs, and offers a private selection of Mid-Century Modern pieces, and iconic and emerging designs for the home. All art, furniture, wine and food are available for purchase.
Local artists are encouraged to submit work for upcoming art shows at The Tasting Room. The Gallery Sitka website is now open for submissions where artists can upload their bios, artist statements, and recent works at gallerysitka.com/newport-wine-cellar.
