Bernard Ethier — Artist’s Biography

Greenfield native, Bernard Ethier began painting as a child under the guidance of John Edward Phelps, a well-known teacher of Springfield, Massachusetts. Ethier later graduate from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts. He returned to his native Greenfield to teach art at the local High School in the 1960’s. He was elected, at this time, to the Presidency of the Deerfield Valley Art Association. Ethier had one-man exhibitions of his work at the old WHAI Gallery and the newly formed Greenfield Community College. Since leaving this area in the late 1960’s, Ethier has lived in and painted in Rockport, Massachusetts, Woodstock, Vermont and in the seacoast village of Inverness in Northern California. In Vermont, he was a regular exhibitor at the Stratton Mt. Arts Festival, The Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College and the Miller Art Center in Springfield, Vermont. During his two decades in California, Ethier became known for his oils of the Pacific coast, and he had numerous exhibitions in galleries in the Marin County, Mendocino area. Since returning to Greenfield in 1997, Bernard Ethier strives to carry on the traditions of his mentors: Stephen Maniatty of Old Deerfield and Lester Stevens of Conway.
