SUMMARY:Veronique Sapin — Symptoms
DESCRIPTION:“Symptoms 2” by Veronique Sapin\nGallery Sitka announces the exhibition “Symptoms” by French visual artist Veronique Sapin\, with an opening reception on Friday\, April 26 from 4:30-6:30pm. Sapin\, whose studio is in Cugnaux\, France\, will be in attendance at the Shirley gallery. The show will be displayed through May 3. Also planned is an Artist Talk\, “Sisterhood in Art\, as a Consequence\, as a Strategy” at the Fitchburg Art Museum Thursday\, May 2\, from 12:30-1:30pm. Both the artist reception and the artist talk are free and open to the public. \nThe full scope of Véronique Sapin’s artwork is of the visual arts nature\, including videos\, installations\, photos\, ink\, and art books. Her artwork has been a part of more than 240 showings in forty countries. She is also curator\, co-founder and coordinator of the international women artists collective FemLink-Art which involves 140+ artists from 60+ countries. She has initiated important partnerships with institutions such as Unesco for the video training of African women artists. \nFor this exhibition at Gallery Sitka\, Sapin focuses on an ink painting art method she gleaned while living in Singapore where she took classes from artist Lim Choon Jin. \nMs. Sapin offers\, “Working with ink means anticipating what the ink will want to do\, expecting it not to do so\, and measuring our degree of intervention on its freedom. This implies a constant game of partnership and adversity between the artist and the medium.” \nGallery Sitka owner\, Tamar Russell Brown states\, “We have been expanding the gallery’s breadth of artists and offerings to include more international art. Veronique is our first French female artist to have as part of our Gallery Sitka family; we invite the community to join us in welcoming her!” \nAdditional information can be found at Gallery Sitka – Sapin. \nView the show on Artsy\nRead the PR

SUMMARY:One Moment in Time
DESCRIPTION:“Green Mansions” by Barbara Groh Wahlstrom\nBarbara Groh Wahlstrom is a visual artist who has immersed herself in the creative process for over four decades creating highly personal abstract works of art. Many travels between continents inform her visual language as her sense of place\, space and time are influenced by home and landscape. \nMs. Groh offers\, “One Moment In Time is inspired by India\, Costa Rica and the Connecticut River by their proximity to water. It is a synthesis of location\, perception\, physicality\, freedom and meditation.” \nMs. Groh adds\, “Regarding my technique\, I use materials that are best suited to communicate my response to a particular observation\, experience\, or form. One Moment In Time showcases various techniques: acrylic and a natural herbal paste\, oil and graphite\, ink and watercolor\, and cold wax and oil. My art may reflect a quiet practice\, a calligraphic meditation\, or an energetic expression of freedom.” \nView the show on Artsy\nRead the PR\n

SUMMARY:The Fragile Beautiful Earth – Earth Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:“Bound Remnants in Brick” by Barbara Groh Wahlstrom\nNewport\, R.I.\, April 7\, 2023 – Gallery Sitka’s latest exhibition\, “The Fragile Beautiful Earth” opens with a reception on Earth Day\, Saturday\, April 22\, 2-4 pm.   \nMany of the 26 participating artists will be in attendance for the gallery reception. The juried exhibition will be shown through May 25 (with gallery hours Thurs.-Sun.). \nCurator\, Beth Barry\, offers\, “We have all been called upon to repurpose\, reduce\, reuse\, recycle\, restore\, and reinvent our planet we depend on. As artists\, we inherently do this – make and remake something uniquely our own. For this exhibit\, we asked artists to incorporate and channel their emotions about our fragile planet into creations of the earth’s beauty. Artists’ interpretations range from literal\, metaphorical\, to spiritual.” \nThe materials\, as well\, range from conventional to unconventional; from oil paint to detritus; from literal earth to discarded plastic bags and bottles. Used and deflated helium balloons make for a large jellyfish hanging from the wall. Abstract landscapes\, encaustics\, and photography round out the show’s works. \nGallery Sitka owner\, Tamar Russell Brown offers\, “We feel strongly about our responsibility for the health of our planet. Our way of paying attention\, and drawing attention\, is through our actions – including artwork.” \n“With Beth being a NY-based artist\, and I\, a New England-based gallery owner\, we were able to draw upon a wide\, diverse and talented pool of artists for this show. We have selected 45 works by 27 artists and are excited to share these intriguing and thought-provoking results on Earth Day through the end of May.” \nView the show on Artsy\nRead the PR\n
