A former public school art teacher for 15 years\, she has exhibited in solo and juried shows including the Fitchburg Regional Exhibition of Art at the Fitchburg Art Museum and the Northeastern Regional Fine Arts Exhibition. \nArtist Statement — The Shape of Things: \nThis series of abstract paintings reflects how I see and respond to the world around me. Unlike my water series\, which explores inner thought and emotion\, these works turn outward—recording and translating my perceptions. \nEach piece is divided into sections that create a unifying structure in the series\, while every canvas carries its own energy—whether evoking the resonance of sound\, the shift of seasons\, or the sensation of movement. The Shape of Things invites viewers to discover their own connections within these paintings and reflect on their own experiences.

DESCRIPTION:‘Parade of One’ by Kim White\nArtist’s Statement \nI am interested in how “story” works in our experience of ourselves. We are inherent story makers in the sense that our experiences become stories when they move to memory. Once an experience has passed it becomes an echo of itself; either fading away if we don’t note it\, or becoming a permanent part of the fabric of the perception of ourselves as we repeat the story\, consciously or unconsciously. In my work I want to capture\, not the specific details of a story\, but rather what it feels like as all the pieces and complexities of a story are in motion within us. In these works on paper\, I use water-based mixed media to explore a few different ways that we create story in our human experience. \nMuch as flower notes are brought to life in a perfume blend by “fecal” undertones (think Jasmine)\, I like to contrast bright color and joyful movement in my works with imagery that feels a little off or maybe uncomfortable. As we move through life trying to create happiness and peace\, we struggle with anxieties\, frustrations\, traumas\, secret fears and shames. I include these discomforts of existence in my work to bring light to them\, not letting them fester in the dark. They are a part of life. As we open to these darker parts of our stories\, releasing them to the day\, we can better allow ourselves to enjoy our successes and pleasures. \nBLACK GROUP – Subconscious Stories\nExplores dreams\, fears\, unexamined stories\, stories that run in the background of our awareness\, shaping our experiences of ourselves and reality. \n\n In the Dark 1\n In the Dark 2\n In the Dark 3\n\nWHITE GROUP – Conscious Stories\nDepicts the act of telling\, expressing our story. DESCRIPTION:‘Red House on the Harbor’ by Priscilla Levesque\nArtist’s Statement \n\nI am intrigued by the relationship between buildings and their surroundings\, and how light changes the appearance of brick\, wood\, stone or glass. When I go walking near my home in N. Chelmsford\, I watch for landscapes or houses which I can turn into an interesting composition. Rather than paint on location\, I take photos and then paint in my studio.I like this procedure because I can consider the  whole composition\, rather than dwelling on small details which may change quickly. \nFor the past several years I have used the pointillist technique\, which was developed by the French painter Georges Seurat in the 1880’s. He built up colors by juxtaposing tiny dots of various hues\, which merge together when seen from a distance.  In this technique of “optical mixing”\, the color mixture occurs in the eyes rather than on the palette. \nThe painting medium I use is casein\, which is an opaque water-base paint. The advantages are that casein dries fast\, needs no special solvents and\, since it is opaque\, colors can be overlaid very easily. For many years I used transparent watercolor which is tricky\, because once an area of paint is too dark\, it’s very difficult to fix. SUMMARY:Ocean Land Lines – Lora Whelan
DESCRIPTION:“Storm Surge Upland Tidal Zone” by Lora Whelan\nGallery Sitka announces the exhibition “Ocean Land Lines” by contemporary artist Lora Whelan. The public is invited to the free opening reception on Saturday\, August 10\, from 1:30-3:30 pm; Whelan will be in attendance. The show will be on display through August 31. \nLora Whelan\, who lives year-round and maintains her studio in Eastport\, Maine\, explains the impetus behind her current exhibition\, “Downeast Maine saw a series of winter storms during 2023/24 which created a collision of wind\, water\, and land. It seemed that the wind never stopped\, that it would blow from one way then come around in what seemed a lull\, and then blow from the other way. The ocean storm surges were overwhelming at times and magnificent in their power.”  \nLand was clawed by waves; trees\, shrubs\, and grasses that had buried their roots into the soil and held back the shore for years disappeared in a matter of hours. Boathouses\, sheds\, wharves\, and some houses were swept off their footings and lost their balance\, sliding off into the storm waters and pounded into pieces.  \nIn response to the ferocity of nature\, Whelan took to her studio where she created a series of works with titles such as “Tidal Mist\,” “Storm Surge” and “Tidal Moonlight.” She explains\, “I started with a large piece of unstretched canvas on the floor\, poured water on it and then started moving paint around with the palette knife. It was a particularly powerful way to start this series as paint can be unruly as it meets water. I felt like I was in the midst of one of those storms\, trying to hold on to order while the water took control.”  \nBorn in New York City\, Whelan graduated from Bennington College in Vermont with a BA\, and from Mercy College in New York with a MS. She is self-taught and revels in exploring and experimentation. DESCRIPTION:“Luminous” by Marli Thibodeau\nGallery Sitka announces the exhibition “Harmonies in Motion” by contemporary artist Marli Thibodeau.  The public is invited to the free opening reception on Friday\, July 26 from 4:30-6:30pm; Thibodeau will be in attendance. The show will be on display through August 9. \nArtist Marli Thibodeau immerses herself in the study of the landscape around her as well as the inner landscape of self-discovery. Her paintings do not reference recognizable form\, and the purposeful omission of exact references are key elements in her work. Thibodeau’s techniques include opaque and transparent layers which represent the ongoing dialog between painter and painting. By questioning what is here now\, present within\, she creates intense personal moments on the canvas. \nThibodeau explains\, “I perceive my painting practice as a visual dance\, with my mark-making as gestures and my color choices as emotions. This approach requires me to remain open to possibility rather than having a set outcome in mind.” \nThibodeau\, a teacher of Azul Conscious Movement (a path of personal transformation)\, finds that movement reveals our inner state\, a reflection of our interior world. Thibodeau says\, “I believe that everyone has a unique way of expressing the experience of who they are\, and I’ve discovered that mine is through un-choreographed visual and movement art. SUMMARY:Nature’s Patterns – Rebekah Robinson & Ylenia Mino
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Sitka announces “Nature’s Patterns” exhibit featuring two artists\, Ylenia Mino\, an Italian artist who resides in Long Beach\, California and Wailuku\, Hawaii\, and Rebekah Robinson who lives in Colorado. The exhibit reception is open and free to the public Thursday\, July 18\, 5:30-7:30pm; both artists will be in attendance. Gallery Sitka/Newport is located on the corner of Spring and Franklin Streets; the show will be displayed through August 2. \n“Blooming Elegance: A Symphony of Colors” by Ylenia Mino\nBorn and raised in the small town of Ivrea\, nestled at the foot of the Italian Alps\, Ylenia Mino studied with an extraordinary Egyptian painter who had trained under a French master. Ylenia pursued classical studies\, including ancient Greek\, Latin\, philosophy\, and art history\, as well as performance arts. \nIn March 2011\, Ylenia debuted as a solo artist at the International Artexpo in New York and later exhibited her work in San Francisco\, London\, Innsbruck (Austria)\, and across Italy. Living in California and Hawaii\, she founded Paint for a Purpose\, empowering individuals and teams through custom creative events\, as well as Furry Friend Portraits. \nMino shares\, “Art is my way of capturing and sharing the profound moments that define our lives. I endeavor to convey the deep emotions and connections that make each moment unique. Growing up at the foot of the Italian Alps\, I was inspired by the natural beauty and cultural richness around me. This inspiration drives me to create art that resonates with personal and universal stories\, imbued with the sophistication of European Italian artistry.” \n“Pontassive Italy” by Rebekah Robinson\nColorado-based artist Rebekah Robinson has studied painting\, printmaking\, photography and graphic design. The landscape has been an overarching theme in her work\, and patterns offer a continued focus. Robinson offers\, “While the natural patterns of leaves floating on a still pond draw my attention\, I am equally fascinated by the human-made patterns of field plantings\, mowings and gardens. At times\, I have focused on the intimate details—the petals of a flower\, the detritus in a flowing stream\, the reflections of water.” \nRobinison’s paintings in this show are representative of a broader view of nature and the inherent larger scope of her natural surroundings living in Colorado and traveling in the American Southwest and Europe.” \nGallery Sitka owner\, Tamar Russell Brown states\, “Ylenia Mino is one of Gallery Sitka’s earliest artists; we are thrilled to host her in our Newport space.
