DESCRIPTION:Join us for an art show featuring the work of watercolor painter\, Eli Portman. \nEli Portman: Artist’s Statement\nI am fascinated with the concept of perception. Many experiences in my life have made me feel quite alone. In those moments\, I feel unique in the way that I perceive things. And yet at the same time\, I strongly believe that we as human beings share many experiences\, many thoughts\, feelings\, and reactions.\nWith my work\, I approach the dissonance between perceived unique individual solitude in a crowded environment\, and the commonness and sameness of such feelings.\nUsing detailed line work and heavy colors\, I illustrate moments of ‘unique’ isolation that we all share. The feeling of walking alone while viewing social excitement through nighttime windows\, or working while others play to their contentment.\nWith controlled ink lines\, I capture shadows and lights. Familiar angles\, familiar feelings brought on by time of day or night\, placement and presence in one’s environment. I manipulate the openness and tightness of visual spaces and interiors to reflect the claustrophobia of society’s open space and the endless emptiness of being crowded and crushed.\nWith strong colors\, I attract the viewer’s eyes to specific spaces within the composition\, reminding them of their own perceptions of environment\, and that I\, like them\, find myself in there too. By capturing these scenes\, I present the commonality between them and me. Though they do not know me\, we are united by the sameness of the humanity we all share.\nThe art exhibitions that affect me most strongly are the ones that remind me of myself. Of what I love\, of what I find beautiful\, and of what I fear. We are always looking for a certain degree of reflections of ourselves. In images\, in friends\, in pets\, in communities\, in romantic partners. With my artwork\, I attempt to bridge the gaps of solitude by harnessing that innate search for our reflections. With familiar scenes\, bright colors\, and fine details of everyday objects and structures\, I create scenes that are familiar in their individuality.

The peaceful movement in each piece is reminiscent of her skill as a performance dancer. \nThese works are on display during September at 5 Merton Road in Newport\, RI. \nRead the PR: \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nFrench Artist Véronique Sapin Brings Contemporary Ink Works to Newport \nNEWPORT\, R.I. — Gallery Sitka South will present an exhibition of work by French visual artist Véronique Sapin from Sept. 6 through Oct. 2 at 5 Merton Road in Newport\, Rhode Island. The exhibition offers Newport visitors an opportunity to experience Sapin’s distinctive contemporary ink paintings\, rooted in movement\, balance\, chance and the expressive possibilities of ink. \nBorn in Rive-de-Gier\, France\, in 1960 and now based in Cugnaux\, France\, Sapin is an internationally exhibited visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice includes video\, photography\, installations\, artist books and ink painting. Since 1995\, her work has been presented in more than 240 events in 40 countries\, including galleries\, museums\, art centers\, biennials and festivals. \nAt the center of Sapin’s ink practice is the drop of ink. Working on raw canvas or paper\, she allows the liquid medium to generate lines\, tracks and forms while carefully influencing its movement. She describes the process as a balance between anticipating what the ink will do and responding when it takes an unexpected direction. The resulting works explore rhythm\, movement\, tension and the constantly shifting relationship between control and chance. \nSapin’s approach is informed in part by her background in dance\, which she practiced intensively for 15 years. Movement\, its traces and its memory have remained central questions throughout her artistic career. Her experience with video editing and digital manipulation has also influenced the way she approaches her ink paintings\, allowing her to consider the works as evolving compositions rather than fixed gestures. \nWhile living in Singapore\, Sapin studied ink painting with artist Lim Choon Jin\, developing the mastery of the medium that characterizes her current work. Her practice reflects a sustained fascination with what happens when an artist gives a material room to move while still maintaining an intentional relationship with the final composition. \nSapin is also the curator\, co-founder and coordinator of FemLink-Art\, an international women artists collective founded in 2005. The collective has included 143 artists from 63 countries and has developed partnerships with institutions including UNESCO. \nThe Newport exhibition continues Gallery Sitka’s commitment to bringing contemporary art and international artists to Rhode Island. With a creative career spanning more than six decades\, Neville has built a body of work that reflects an enduring commitment to artistic exploration\, craftsmanship and cultural engagement. \nFounded under the banner of Neville Art Enterprises in 1964\, Neville’s career has encompassed painting\, sculpture\, collage\, printmaking\, textiles\, illustration\, jewelry\, mosaics\, stained glass\, ceramics\, landscape design and video art. Her work moves freely between mediums while maintaining a distinctive visual language rooted in observation\, imagination and a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of art and life. \nLike the strands of a handwoven tapestry\, Neville’s life in the arts weaves together the creation of artwork\, the writing of art criticism\, curating exhibitions and teaching both studio art and art history. Each endeavor has informed and strengthened the others\, resulting in an unusually rich and multifaceted career. As an artist\, she has presented 35 solo exhibitions from California to New York City\, including the renowned NOHO Gallery\, and her artwork is represented in public and private collections across the United States and abroad. \nAmong the many institutions that hold her work are IBM Headquarters in Paris\, France; the Martin Luther King Jr. Chapel in Atlanta; the Harvard Club of Boston; Won Kak Sa Buddhist Temple in Queens\, New York; Boston University School of Theology; and Milton Town Hall. More than 200 collectors have acquired Neville’s artwork over the years\, a testament to its enduring appeal and significance. \nIn addition to her artistic accomplishments\, Neville has been an influential voice in the arts community as president of New York’s NOHO Gallery artists’ cooperative\, director of the Milton Art Museum\, curator of dozens of exhibitions and a respected arts writer whose criticism has appeared in Artscope Magazine\, Art New England and other publications. Her distinguished career has been recognized with inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who in America and a Lifetime Achievement Award. \nThis exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to experience the breadth and depth of Neville’s artistic vision through a selection of works that celebrate creativity\, craftsmanship and a lifelong dedication to the visual arts.
