Dena’s work will be up for October and November. \nArtist Bio: \nDena Hengst is a Massachusetts painter with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Art from Anna Maria College. A former public school art teacher for 15 years\, she has exhibited in solo and juried shows including the Fitchburg Regional Exhibition of Art at the Fitchburg Art Museum and the Northeastern Regional Fine Arts Exhibition. \nArtist Statement — The Shape of Things: \nThis series of abstract paintings reflects how I see and respond to the world around me. Unlike my water series\, which explores inner thought and emotion\, these works turn outward—recording and translating my perceptions. \nEach piece is divided into sections that create a unifying structure in the series\, while every canvas carries its own energy—whether evoking the resonance of sound\, the shift of seasons\, or the sensation of movement. The Shape of Things invites viewers to discover their own connections within these paintings and reflect on their own experiences.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a wonderful exhibition of work by female New England artist\, Rachel Brask. Gallery Sitka will be featuring this Ms. Brask at 5 Merton Rd. in Newport\, Rhode Island during the month of March. \nRachel Brask is a contemporary abstract/impressionist New England painter. Her current work explores the sensation of looking out through windows during torrential rains. Through these “Abstracted Rainy Moments” paintings\, Brask seeks to show people a fresh\, hopeful perspective on rainy days. She has exhibited in solo exhibitions\, invitational and juried shows around New England and in private collections across the U.S. and in the UK and Italy. She has developed her work at artist residencies in Maine\, North Carolina\, Cape Cod\, and Ontario\, Canada. \nShe has received recognition for her paintings and unique perspective on rainy days. Rachel Brask enjoys working on painting commissions and sharing her love of art through teaching workshops and private art lessons. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an art show featuring the work of watercolor painter\, Eli Portman. \nEli Portman: Artist’s Statement\nI am fascinated with the concept of perception. Many experiences in my life have made me feel quite alone. In those moments\, I feel unique in the way that I perceive things. And yet at the same time\, I strongly believe that we as human beings share many experiences\, many thoughts\, feelings\, and reactions.\nWith my work\, I approach the dissonance between perceived unique individual solitude in a crowded environment\, and the commonness and sameness of such feelings.\nUsing detailed line work and heavy colors\, I illustrate moments of ‘unique’ isolation that we all share. The feeling of walking alone while viewing social excitement through nighttime windows\, or working while others play to their contentment.\nWith controlled ink lines\, I capture shadows and lights. Familiar angles\, familiar feelings brought on by time of day or night\, placement and presence in one’s environment. I manipulate the openness and tightness of visual spaces and interiors to reflect the claustrophobia of society’s open space and the endless emptiness of being crowded and crushed.\nWith strong colors\, I attract the viewer’s eyes to specific spaces within the composition\, reminding them of their own perceptions of environment\, and that I\, like them\, find myself in there too. By capturing these scenes\, I present the commonality between them and me. Though they do not know me\, we are united by the sameness of the humanity we all share.\nThe art exhibitions that affect me most strongly are the ones that remind me of myself. Of what I love\, of what I find beautiful\, and of what I fear. We are always looking for a certain degree of reflections of ourselves. In images\, in friends\, in pets\, in communities\, in romantic partners. With my artwork\, I attempt to bridge the gaps of solitude by harnessing that innate search for our reflections. With familiar scenes\, bright colors\, and fine details of everyday objects and structures\, I create scenes that are familiar in their individuality.
