The public is invited to the free opening reception on Friday\, June 7 from 5:30-7:30pm; there will be refreshments and live music. Featured artists\, Borofsky and Weeks\, will be in attendance. The show will be displayed through July 9. \n  \n“Blue Horizon” by Jeanne Borofsky\nJeanne Borofsky whose studio is in Groton\, MA\, holds a BFA and MFA and is internationally recognized\, with paintings\, prints\, and drawings in numerous museums and private collections. \nA practicing artist for over 50 years\, Borofsky makes art with watercolors\, oils\, encaustics\, collages\, and prints – traditional\, photographic\, encaustic and digital. Borofsky is a member of The Boston Printmakers\, the Depot Square Artists\, the Monotype Guild of New England\, and New England Wax. \nMs. Borofsky states\, “Most of my current work is encaustic collage. Encaustic – painting with hot colored beeswax and damar resin – is a medium that was used by the ancient Greeks. I love the way beeswax creates both physical and visual depth and translucency to the work – adding to the mystery and magic I’m trying to convey. Whatever I put into my art\, it always includes the joy of creation\, the love of art\, and the happiness in my ability to create it.” \n  \n“The Fall” by Kellie Weeks\nKellie Weeks\, whose studio is in Fitchburg\, received a BFA from Bradford College in 2001. After years of exploring many media\, she is now focused on painting with pigment sticks and encaustic. While using encaustics for their insurmountable quality\, depth\, and brilliancy\, Weeks also incorporates dry pigments\, metal leaf\, shellac\, and other mixed media as vehicles to develop a wide lexicon of imagery. Kellie often abstracts elements of nature and her immediate surroundings combining both elements of bold and muted colors. These dynamic compositions lend themselves to stories of relationships and transformations. Kellie’s work has been exhibited nationally in many juried and group shows and is included in both private and public collections. \nWeeks offers\, “Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote\, “The Earth laughs in flowers.” Using encaustic and mixed media as vehicles to communicate abstracted floral compositions\, my paintings are intuitively created using color\, line\, and form as constructs for spiritual illumination. At times the imagery is more subtle than others yet all of the elements speak of journeys\, relationships\, and transformations.” \nTamar Russell Brown\, Gallery Sitka owner stated\, “Gallery Sitka is pleased to host what has become an annual show for Jeanne Borofsky and Kellie Weeks. They were introduced to us in year one of our gallery’s life. They have both now been with us for close to 10 years. Since Gallery Sitka is celebrating 10 years this summer\, we are thrilled to show these accomplished women to kick off the season!” \nAdditional information can be found at Gallery Sitka. \nView the show on Artsy\nRead the PR URL:https://gallerysitka.com/event/kellie-weeks-jeanne-borofsky/ LOCATION:Gallery Sitka East\, 2 Shaker Road\, Suite D101\, Shirley\, MA\, 01464 CATEGORIES:Artist Reception,Shirley ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://gallerysitka.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/GallerySitka_KellieWeeksJeanneBorofsky_web2.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240607 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240710 DTSTAMP:20241120T201431Z CREATED:20241120T201431Z LAST-MODIFIED:20241120T201431Z UID:43076-1717718400-1720569599@gallerysitka.com SUMMARY:Summer's Launch – Kellie Weeks & Jeanne Borofsky DESCRIPTION:Gallery Sitka announces the exhibition “Summer’s Launch” by artists Jeanne Borofsky and Kellie Weeks. The juried exhibition will be shown through May 25 (with gallery hours Thurs.-Sun.). \nCurator\, Beth Barry\, offers\, “We have all been called upon to repurpose\, reduce\, reuse\, recycle\, restore\, and reinvent our planet we depend on. As artists\, we inherently do this – make and remake something uniquely our own. For this exhibit\, we asked artists to incorporate and channel their emotions about our fragile planet into creations of the earth’s beauty. Artists’ interpretations range from literal\, metaphorical\, to spiritual.” \nThe materials\, as well\, range from conventional to unconventional; from oil paint to detritus; from literal earth to discarded plastic bags and bottles. Used and deflated helium balloons make for a large jellyfish hanging from the wall. Abstract landscapes\, encaustics\, and photography round out the show’s works. \nGallery Sitka owner\, Tamar Russell Brown offers\, “We feel strongly about our responsibility for the health of our planet. Our way of paying attention\, and drawing attention\, is through our actions – including artwork.” \n“With Beth being a NY-based artist\, and I\, a New England-based gallery owner\, we were able to draw upon a wide\, diverse and talented pool of artists for this show. As I listen to music\, colors emerge and begin to dance in my mind. Each type of music requires different colors. Even within one genre\, the colors can be quite different depending on the mood of the music. This series deals with calming classical music. The colors reflect the peacefulness I want to evoke.\nAbstraction allows me to express the emotions that motivate my painting. Colors and movement give voice to those emotions. I develop a language as I progress through the paintings and hope you can feel the emotion and see the music as I do.\nI choose my materials for the great freedom of expression they allow. Acrylics dry quickly\, but can also be worked wet in wet for blended colors. Brushes\, palette knives\, even my hands – each tool offers a different mark and a different form of expression. As I work wet in wet\, the colors naturally begin to blend and layers of color are introduced. Marks reveal under-layers and lines. Color becomes my partner as I dance across the canvas with the music.\nThe marks I make emphasize the movement of the music. The colors combine to create the feeling. They mix and mingle as the notes do\, creating harmony.
