DESCRIPTION:  \n“Sunlight” by Melanie Zibit\nGallery Sitka announces the exhibition “Portrait of Nature” by sculptor Melanie Zibit and artist/photographer Zen Saito. The public is invited to the free opening reception on Sunday\, May 5 from 2:30-4:30pm; Saito and Zibit will be in attendance. The show will be displayed through June 5. \nSculptor and Shirley Massachusetts resident\, Melanie Zibit learned to carve in the marble workshops of Carrara\, Italy. Her passion for creating sculpture started as an undergraduate and then grew in her 20s to working with artists in rural Maine and in New York City. Zibit carves at the Vermont Carving Studio and Sculpture Center. She gives presentations at museums\, schools\, universities\, galleries\, and arts festivals and has received commissions and exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the US. Zibit is the recipient of the 2014 and 2015 NYC Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club award and the 2015 Best Abstract in Show award from the Cape Cod Art Association. \nZibit states\, “I am inspired by ancient and modern sculptors. I use marble and bronze\, classical materials\, and components of forms found in nature to create a modern statement. Leaving elements natural or forms unfinished invites the viewer to complete the form in their mind’s eye.” \n“Sunflower” by Zen Saito\nArtist\, Japanese native\, and Fitchburg resident Zen Saito (a.k.a. Yoshiyuki Saito) grew up in a small town in Japan with a family that supported his creativity. By age 18\, Zen had moved to Tokyo to study design. At age 24 he moved to New York where he studied at The Art Students League of New York\, worked at a sculptor studio\, and exhibited his work in group and solo shows in Brooklyn and Manhattan. In 2007 Zen moved to Massachusetts and has expanded his artistic endeavors to include carpentry. \nZen shares\, “My artwork is often influenced by nature\, and often reflects the period of my life. She is also curator\, co-founder and coordinator of the international women artists collective FemLink-Art which involves 140+ artists from 60+ countries. DESCRIPTION:Image of Gallery Sitka Earth Day Exhibit 2023 by Lawrence Libby\nGallery Sitka announces its annual Earth Day exhibition\, with an opening reception on Friday\, April 5 from 4:30-6:30pm. This year’s Earth Day theme is “Ocean Rising” and features a group show with a variety of mediums on display. All are welcome to the free reception with the artists at Gallery Sitka\, 2 Shaker Road in Shirley. The exhibit will be available for viewing through April 24. \nGallery Sitka owner\, Tamar Russell Brown states\, “Recently many of us have seen intense flooding in Central Mass.\, on the Vineyard\, and in Newport. Therefore\, this year’s Earth Day art exhibition will focus on our oceans\, rising sea levels\, flooding\, and the like. DESCRIPTION:Image of Gallery Sitka Earth Day Exhibit 2023 by Lawrence Libby\nGallery Sitka announces its annual Earth Day exhibition\, with an opening reception on Friday\, April 5 from 4:30-6:30pm. This year’s Earth Day theme is “Ocean Rising” and features a group show with a variety of mediums on display. All are welcome to the free reception with the artists at Gallery Sitka\, 2 Shaker Road in Shirley. DESCRIPTION:“Bound Remnants in Brick” by Barbara Groh Wahlstrom\nNewport\, R.I.\, April 7\, 2023 – Gallery Sitka’s latest exhibition\, “The Fragile Beautiful Earth” opens with a reception on Earth Day\, Saturday\, April 22\, 2-4 pm.   \nMany of the 26 participating artists will be in attendance for the gallery reception. The juried exhibition will be shown through May 25 (with gallery hours Thurs.-Sun.). \nCurator\, Beth Barry\, offers\, “We have all been called upon to repurpose\, reduce\, reuse\, recycle\, restore\, and reinvent our planet we depend on. As artists\, we inherently do this – make and remake something uniquely our own. For this exhibit\, we asked artists to incorporate and channel their emotions about our fragile planet into creations of the earth’s beauty. Artists’ interpretations range from literal\, metaphorical\, to spiritual.” \nThe materials\, as well\, range from conventional to unconventional; from oil paint to detritus; from literal earth to discarded plastic bags and bottles. Used and deflated helium balloons make for a large jellyfish hanging from the wall. Abstract landscapes\, encaustics\, and photography round out the show’s works. \nGallery Sitka owner\, Tamar Russell Brown offers\, “We feel strongly about our responsibility for the health of our planet. Our way of paying attention\, and drawing attention\, is through our actions – including artwork.” \n“With Beth being a NY-based artist\, and I\, a New England-based gallery owner\, we were able to draw upon a wide\, diverse and talented pool of artists for this show. She received a bachelor’s degree (BA) in Art History from Vassar College. \nFor two decades\, Shelley was senior archivist at JPMorgan Chase & Co.\, supervising all aspects of the bank’s varied historical collections\, including the organization\, cataloging\, housing\, and preservation of archival records (analog/digital)\, artifacts\, and works of art. DESCRIPTION:“Air” by Kate Shaffer\n“Music and color inspire me. As I listen to music\, colors emerge and begin to dance in my mind. Each type of music requires different colors. Even within one genre\, the colors can be quite different depending on the mood of the music. This series deals with calming classical music. The colors reflect the peacefulness I want to evoke.\nAbstraction allows me to express the emotions that motivate my painting. Colors and movement give voice to those emotions. I develop a language as I progress through the paintings and hope you can feel the emotion and see the music as I do.\nI choose my materials for the great freedom of expression they allow. Acrylics dry quickly\, but can also be worked wet in wet for blended colors. Brushes\, palette knives\, even my hands – each tool offers a different mark and a different form of expression. As I work wet in wet\, the colors naturally begin to blend and layers of color are introduced. Marks reveal under-layers and lines. Color becomes my partner as I dance across the canvas with the music.\nThe marks I make emphasize the movement of the music. The colors combine to create the feeling. She received her BA in Renaissance Studies from Trinity College in Hartford\, CT\, her MA in History of Art from Johns Hopkins University\, and her Ph.D. in Art History from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. \nGinny has curated art exhibitions for more than forty years for museums and galleries such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, DC\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Toledo Museum of Art\, Yale University Art Gallery\, and other institutions around the country. She has also organized shows at various New Jersey galleries such as the Arts Guild in Rahway\, the Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster\, Gallery 14 Maple at Morris Arts in Morristown\,  and the Watchung Art Center. In February 2020\, she opened her fortieth major exhibition\, The Material World\, at the Maloney Art Gallery. She has been awarded two NEA grants for multi-disciplinary programs\, “The Phrase in Art” and “When Art and Science Collaborate\,” and private grants that support the exhibitions and programs of the Gallery. In May 2010\, Dr. Butera was named Arts Advocate of the Year by Morris Arts\, Morristown\, NJ. She has published and lectured widely during her career on various aspects of art history and curating\, and on professional practice and legacy planning for artists.

SUMMARY:Glimmer: A Small Works Virtual Art Show
DESCRIPTION:“Glimmers of Hope” by Regina Mailloux\nCertain that “humanity is in a dark place” at this time\, Melissa A. Richard is projecting a message of hope and beauty for art lovers in New England. She provides her own artwork and curates that of six other artists in an online exhibition entitled “Glimmer on the Horizon\,” which begins Friday\, Nov. 6\, originating from Gallery Sitka in Shirley\, Mass. \n“Tamar wanted to point things in a positive direction\,” says Ms. Richard\, referring to Gallery Sitka owner Tamar Russell Brown. Finalists for this show will be selected after the Nov. 1 deadline. The theme of hopeful signs on the horizon recalls the sentiment expressed by the verse\, “His eye is on the sparrow\,” a theme that has inspired many songwriters. That is\, the small fragments of light are figuratively brave attempts of artists to dispel the darkness of hard times with their hopeful vision of tomorrow. Appropriately\, Ms. Richard will select diminutive pieces no bigger than 11 by 14 inches. Melissa’s own pieces will reach even further into this theme. Her paintings—employing such strategies as work on paper and collage and such materials as acrylic and wax—will pack an artistic punch and concentration into paintings no larger than four by four (again\, that’s inches). SUMMARY:Black & White Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Retrospective for David L. Smith\n\n\n\n\nAs we evolved to appreciate and understand each other 2020 my Love is black or white. The shades of gray\, the plastic edge may define us but is does not separate us. Art rule # 1 says “For an edge to pops three dimensionally black is next to white. The interlude between darkness and light are the tools we use to define reality. Truly the big picture is we care about each other\, as friends and family\, aside from our differences\, true friendship and camaraderie means that we are “grown up” enough to listen\, express\, love\, and create freely as Artists. We are in it for the long haul. The loss of one of us is deeply felt\, I grieve\, yet I create because I feel this loss\, Art fills my soul with joy and allows me to exist in a Toppy Turvey world. It is with sadness and joy that I share “Living on the Edge” with a few friends\, family\, and fellow Artists. \nA memory for me personally as I struggle to find justification for my plastic edge and broken reassembled work. I was just allowing myself to admit I did mosaics and began to utilize and repair with found and altered objects. These ideas began to creep into my sculpture and my collage efforts I had not yet landed on the photo still-life’s and paper collages of today. \nDuring all this soul searching\, David said\, “You know I never really liked Mosaics\,” a letdown? “No.” \nMutual respect as he continued to devise pristine wooden substrate that allowed me to hang my ceramic slab art as wonderful broken paintings. David allowed me to reach my full potential\, as artist\, wife\, and mother for 37 years. With David I developed a consistent work ethic. \nThank you\, my love\, you are missed. \n– Colette A. Smith\nwritten by his wife Colette\nDavid passed before his work was truly viewed and cherished. \nHis family and friends understood David and his sense of humor. He was free to create and work on his art. He ran a furniture refinishing shop and studio\, rebuilt our home\, and raised two children. David was a good father and loved his family very much. I wish he were here to see his ideas and his beliefs come to life with this show. David work was sought after in the Boston area\, articles written in local paper about him as he was up and coming. After graduating from Boston University in 1987 his work appeared in Design Book Four put out by Fine woodworking. His furniture was shown at the Society of Arts and Crafts a few times. He was a successful student of Alphonce Mattia\, and people commissioned his furniture many times over the years. The best in the local area between central Massachusetts and Boston. His customers were loyal and to this day utilize the shop and wood working studio in Leominster. Hugh Norton a furniture specialist and repair expert from Gentle Giant Moving company antique division continued Renaissance Restoration Inc. To this day Hugh lives up to David’s standards and expertise. One can still bring broken parts in a box to this establishment and claim that it was an ere loom and could you please put it back together for my grandchildren. The expertise and creative talent of Renaissance Restoration can and will. 45 Granite street Leominster\, MA third floor rear. David ran a tight ship. We were together 37 years\, married for 32.  He is missed\, loved\, and remembered by his work and his humor. \nWe put this show together with his work in mind. Black and white portrait is where he lived. I offer a few choices works and portraits here for sale. He studied and developed his own painting technique. He worked in his own style and followed his own path\, I was an onlooker\, a sounding board\, the other half so to speak. David was a shy\, soul that had a steadfast work ethic. He was a perfectionist; we had a wonderful life together. Mondrian and I were quite the team when we met David. Tucker his son carries on David’s skills\, as Mondrian has his sensitivity and unique verbal perspective. I am awed by them as we all grieve for his passing\, I expect to do an inclusive retrospective around April of 2021. I have included some work that the family wishes to keep for the moment as NFS and a few that we believe we could reproduce again as needed. Maybe not by his slight of hand in wood but on canvas from the graphic image. They are beautiful works that would delight any home. Here in Black and White. \nWe are all “Living on the Edge.” \n\n  \nColette Aline Shumate-Smith\nRepresented by Gallery Sitka\n \nI am an Artist; I always have been an Artist it is what I know best. Art and thoughts of creating something fill my time and space. Art is what I think about. I always had a pair of scissors\, or play dough\, or an image I was obsessing to draw or learn. I learned to draw and paint because I wanted to render what I saw. My mother was a fine artist illustrator I thought that was what Art was. I struggled to learn to see\, render and paint correctly. That was never going to happen I learned when I applied to the painting department at Boston University. They sent my work to the Ceramic studio. Good thing I had included my ceramics in my portfolio of 50 works of art. \nMy daughter somehow understood this. “You know how you are Mom. Right?” \nWhat does that mean. Exactly. \nI am an emotional being I react to my environment. I spin my wheels\, organizing a workspace\, getting\, and gathering materials I think I need. \nA stamp\, a letter a piece of paper. I am filling up my visual cortex to the brim until it explodes in some fashion. Then get out of the way. 30\, 40\, 100 works of Art come forth. These days I have learned to limit a series to 10 not 25. \nA potter a painter a poet\, a photographer a collector of images. These days I limit my response to 10. I am working on my inner Zen\, my chi\, hoping to simplify my life and times I work on about four shows a year. Alice\, Earth Day\, Harvest and now the Black and White series. That is a show a season every four months to be producing new work.     \nI have learned to layer the image. Again\, Mondrian asks “How can you know what you are doing with all the confusion?” \nI start with an image I want from a photograph\, or a pencil sketch. Then with a 4-inch brush I topcoat the gesso layer. This gives the final image power. In clay it would be porcelain slip that comes first than under glaze and two to three glaze firings. In Acrylic it is gesso\, drywall compound\, gesso\, white or colored paint than progressively thinner and thinner media\, and finally print ink then drying and sealing. The paint coating is developed in a series of days\, steps or with layer of paper collage. Like the illustrator it is a surface worked up thru line\, paint texture and color. But\, with big powerful emotional brushes. The abstract forces of nature\, the paint is added and washed away\, blended\, dry brushed\, dusted over the texture. In oil it is dripped into medium over gesso and ink. The work is there in the beginning sometimes in a light and shadow layer. Or sculpted texture with a tool. \nThe plastic edge is what defines it the dark against light. My Artwork had this early on. I liked to work with color straight out of the tube and blend on the canvas as a fauvist would. Now I have learned to pick and choose a color pallet\, to limit my choice\, this way if I have to change or alter something I can go back to the same color without having to remix it. \nI have always just worked at being myself. The Art is part of me. The extra images that are somehow trapped in the picture plain were always there. Just like telephone poles bring you up to the sky and direct your eye back down again. My mother would be annoyed with them a sign of imperfection\, my father would say they are the beginning of a cross and what a blessing to see that beginning. The images within an image add to the texture and plastic edge of life. Who are we to say our lives are one way or another? Really\, I am here to be who I am. I can glimpse into my work into my ideas into my time thru Art. Thinking about creating and knowing how to create and doing the work are the many stages I go through to bring a work of art into being. For an artist like me it is a fun journey\, yet sometimes a difficult task. If it works that is wonderful if it does not\, I have learned to paint over it. Black and White is not only a drawing\, it is a new and challenging world between light and shadow\, mist\, and cloud.
