SUMMARY:Portrait of Nature – Melanie Zibit & Zen Saito
DESCRIPTION:  \n“Sunlight” by Melanie Zibit\nGallery Sitka announces the exhibition “Portrait of Nature” by sculptor Melanie Zibit and artist/photographer Zen Saito. The public is invited to the free opening reception on Sunday\, May 5 from 2:30-4:30pm; Saito and Zibit will be in attendance. The show will be displayed through June 5. \nSculptor and Shirley Massachusetts resident\, Melanie Zibit learned to carve in the marble workshops of Carrara\, Italy. Her passion for creating sculpture started as an undergraduate and then grew in her 20s to working with artists in rural Maine and in New York City. Zibit carves at the Vermont Carving Studio and Sculpture Center. She gives presentations at museums\, schools\, universities\, galleries\, and arts festivals and has received commissions and exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the US. Zibit is the recipient of the 2014 and 2015 NYC Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club award and the 2015 Best Abstract in Show award from the Cape Cod Art Association. \nZibit states\, “I am inspired by ancient and modern sculptors. I use marble and bronze\, classical materials\, and components of forms found in nature to create a modern statement. Leaving elements natural or forms unfinished invites the viewer to complete the form in their mind’s eye.” \n“Sunflower” by Zen Saito\nArtist\, Japanese native\, and Fitchburg resident Zen Saito (a.k.a. Yoshiyuki Saito) grew up in a small town in Japan with a family that supported his creativity. By age 18\, Zen had moved to Tokyo to study design. At age 24 he moved to New York where he studied at The Art Students League of New York\, worked at a sculptor studio\, and exhibited his work in group and solo shows in Brooklyn and Manhattan. In 2007 Zen moved to Massachusetts and has expanded his artistic endeavors to include carpentry. \nZen shares\, “My artwork is often influenced by nature\, and often reflects the period of my life. I once wanted my artwork to carry messages to the world — but recently I have just been enjoying working with different media\, exploring and developing new skills\, opening up my freedom to challenge my creativity.” \nAdditional information can be found at Gallery Sitka. \nView the show on Artsy\nRead the PR

SUMMARY:Summer's Launch – Kellie Weeks & Jeanne Borofsky
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Sitka announces the exhibition “Summer’s Launch” by artists Jeanne Borofsky and Kellie Weeks. The public is invited to the free opening reception on Friday\, June 7 from 5:30-7:30pm; there will be refreshments and live music. Featured artists\, Borofsky and Weeks\, will be in attendance. The show will be displayed through July 9. \n  \n“Blue Horizon” by Jeanne Borofsky\nJeanne Borofsky whose studio is in Groton\, MA\, holds a BFA and MFA and is internationally recognized\, with paintings\, prints\, and drawings in numerous museums and private collections. \nA practicing artist for over 50 years\, Borofsky makes art with watercolors\, oils\, encaustics\, collages\, and prints – traditional\, photographic\, encaustic and digital. Borofsky is a member of The Boston Printmakers\, the Depot Square Artists\, the Monotype Guild of New England\, and New England Wax. \nMs. Borofsky states\, “Most of my current work is encaustic collage. Encaustic – painting with hot colored beeswax and damar resin – is a medium that was used by the ancient Greeks. I love the way beeswax creates both physical and visual depth and translucency to the work – adding to the mystery and magic I’m trying to convey. Whatever I put into my art\, it always includes the joy of creation\, the love of art\, and the happiness in my ability to create it.” \n  \n“The Fall” by Kellie Weeks\nKellie Weeks\, whose studio is in Fitchburg\, received a BFA from Bradford College in 2001. After years of exploring many media\, she is now focused on painting with pigment sticks and encaustic. While using encaustics for their insurmountable quality\, depth\, and brilliancy\, Weeks also incorporates dry pigments\, metal leaf\, shellac\, and other mixed media as vehicles to develop a wide lexicon of imagery. Kellie often abstracts elements of nature and her immediate surroundings combining both elements of bold and muted colors. These dynamic compositions lend themselves to stories of relationships and transformations. Kellie’s work has been exhibited nationally in many juried and group shows and is included in both private and public collections. \nWeeks offers\, “Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote\, “The Earth laughs in flowers.” Using encaustic and mixed media as vehicles to communicate abstracted floral compositions\, my paintings are intuitively created using color\, line\, and form as constructs for spiritual illumination. At times the imagery is more subtle than others yet all of the elements speak of journeys\, relationships\, and transformations.” \nTamar Russell Brown\, Gallery Sitka owner stated\, “Gallery Sitka is pleased to host what has become an annual show for Jeanne Borofsky and Kellie Weeks. They were introduced to us in year one of our gallery’s life. They have both now been with us for close to 10 years. Since Gallery Sitka is celebrating 10 years this summer\, we are thrilled to show these accomplished women to kick off the season!” \nAdditional information can be found at Gallery Sitka. \nView the show on Artsy\nRead the PR
