Gallery Sitka® Announces
AQUIDNECK BREEZE Art Exhibit & Reception
Sunday, May 4, 2-4pm
Newport, R.I., April 14, 2025 – Gallery Sitka® latest exhibition, Aquidneck Breeze, opens with a reception on Sunday, May 4, from 2-4pm at Gallery Sitka® in Newport, on the corner of Spring and Franklin Streets. Featured are works by artists Beth Barry, Ruth LaGue, and Veronica Lawlor.
Gallery Sitka® owner Tamar Russell Brown, states, “Please mark your calendar for this show as we are presenting three talented artists, one of whom is new to our gallery. Veronica Lawlor’s work has been presented at the Louvre and the UN. Her work is in good company with Ruth LaGue and Beth Barry, two of our artists who continue to wow me with their colorful, dynamic and skillful work. Come see!”

Veronica Lawlor is a reportage artist, meaning she captures stories and events through drawing or illustration, often on location, with an emphasis on documenting real-life situations and experiences. Her work has been presented at the Louvre, exhibited by the UN, and is in numerous private collections including Chase Private Client and the SOHO House NY, for whom she created a mural. Veronica is on the faculty of Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, and the Woodstock School of Art. She lives and works in New York City and the Hudson Valley, NY.
“My painted and mixed media works are grounded in my location drawing practice and the expression of sense of place. Immersed with my drawing board in the wild places of nature and the grittier urban spaces of human making, I translate the energy of life that vibrates within. These drawings become my point of departure for studio painting, in which I deconstruct shapes, utilizing line, texture and color layering to embody the sensation of memory that lingers.”

Ruth LaGue, a RISD graduate, grew up in Alaska, awed by the incredible vastness of the wild landscape. Gazing at the expansive skies and majestic mountains as a girl, Ruth recognized that she was a small part of something much larger than herself. Traveling through India in her twenties, she became consumed by the landscape of the spirit — that limitless interior universe that lives in each of us. The marriage of the two experiences ignited a lifelong quest to connect the outer and inner within her paintings. Ruth strives for visual economy in her work; to her, landscapes represent fragments of time; intimate moments of communion with something greater than herself; quiet meditations to which she bears witness.

Beth Barry‘s themes range from celebration to reinterpretation to immediate reaction to impacted landscapes. Barry’s artistic influences include the coastline (as she was born in New Bedford) and the concept of rebirth is a recurring reference. Barry shares, “I characterize my paintings as landscapes with emotional concepts and feelings. Yet the works are often devoid of literal landscape references. I opt for transparent layers of primitive structures, loose gestures, and energetic color combinations.”
