Artist’s Statement – Ocean Works

I have always found the ocean and it’s surrounding landscape a source of peace and solitude. Perhaps it is the constantly changing seascape or maybe it is the sound of the crashing surf that transports me to a place where I can daydream. These photographs explore my relationship with the ocean. I used long exposures to capture the fluid movement of water and the powerful contrast between it’s intense raw energy and the overwhelming sense of tranquility  that I feel when I am there.

Artist’s Statement – Cyanotype Works/Books

I am a photographer, I like to go places and photograph. But during the start of the pandemic I found myself like so many others quarantined and unable to go places other than my backyard. The pandemic, complicated by my printer breaking down forced me to explore other ways to express myself. Inspired by the work of Anna Atkins and the need to find solace I turned toward nature and I started working in the historical process of cyanotypes. I specifically started doing “wet” cyanotypes that use water, vinegar, spices from my kitchen cabinet and soap bubbles to make one of a kind celebrations of the botanical life in my yard. The serendipity of this process is joyful and addictive. Eventually after having my printer fixed I was able to make digital negatives and my world of cyanotypes expanded. One day after studying the work I found relationships between the photographs and so naturally the next step would be books. After making a few books with cyanotypes I started to incorporate image transfers on various japanese papers into the design of the books. The images in the books speak to each other, telling my story even farther. I hope to inspire the viewer to see the beauty that surrounds us and find peace from the stressful world we live in.
