Artist’s Statement

For Veronique Sapin, video, photo and ink painting share the same ability to capture movement in the process of being accomplished. Because this movement can generate the unknown and therefore uncertainty, it serves as a vocabulary for exploring the notion of tension which is present in any search for balance.

It is her practice of video editing and the use of software for her photos that led Sapin to consider her ink paintings as susceptible to “manipulation” after they have been produced.

The Ink

“Its lines are generated in time” (Levi Civita)

While living in Singapore, Veronique took classes from artist Lim Choon Jin with whom she reached her current level of ink painting mastery.

Working with ink means anticipating what it will want to do, expecting it not to do so, and measuring our degree of intervention on its freedom. This implies a constant game of partnership and adversity between the artist and the medium.

The Drop of Ink

The drop has the time to wait… a certain time.

The artist modulates the pressure, the movement, the quantity, the thickness, the height and the size of the ink jets as they migrate onto their support.

On raw canvas or paper, Véronique Sapin works from the drop of ink as the generator of all its forms. The intimate liquidity of the drop possesses potential for rhythm and movement. It is thus continuously waiting for the imbalance that will initiate the direction it will take.

The result is a canvas inhabited by drops of ink, exposing a mesh of tracks like so many axes for walks that depend on the fluctuating relationships between the drops themselves and the supports that host them.

Artist’s Biography

She has initiated important partnerships with institutions such as Unesco for the video training of women artists from the African continent.

Dance has occupied all of Véronique Sapin’s free time during fifteen years of intensive practice and guided her first professional projects before turning into a questioning of movement, its trace and its memory, through all her artistic productions.
