Newport, R.I., June 5, 2023 – Gallery Sitka’s latest exhibition, “Brainscapes” opens with a reception on Saturday, June 24, 2-4pm at Gallery Sitka’s Newport location on the corner of Spring and Franklin Streets. “Brainscapes” is the brainchild of New York based artist, Beth Barry.

Barry’s themes range from celebration to reinterpretation to immediate reaction to impacted landscapes. Barry’s artistic influences include the coastline, as she was born in New Bedford, MA; an early experience of airplane flight and seeing landscapes from a different dimension and perspective; as well as her work as a psychotherapist.

Barry shares, “I characterize my paintings as landscapes with emotional concepts and feelings. Yet the works are often devoid of literal landscape references, including the horizon line. I opt for transparent layers of primitive structures, loose gestures, and energetic color combinations. The concept of ‘rebirth’ is a recurring reference – how nature grows back from natural disasters to create new beginnings.”

Gallery Sitka owner, Tamar Russell Brown notes, “Gallery Sitka has represented Beth Barry for years and we are thrilled to show work that connects us with New Bedford and NYC. Beth’s work is perfect for the Newport coastal environment. She is a joy and a very professional artist in her focus as a painter; we know Newport residents will enjoy her work. And to make our gallery more accessible to the Newport community, we are expanding our hours to be open every day. We have scheduled new shows/artists each month this year, so we encourage people to visit regularly to experience what’s new and different.”

The “Brainscapes” exhibition will show June 24 through July 14, with gallery hours from 11-5 every day.
