“Capillary Waves” by Shira Toren, 36”x36”

Newport, R.I., July 6, 2023 – Gallery Sitka’s latest exhibition, “Pulsing Waves” opens with a reception on Saturday, July 15, 2-4pm at Gallery Sitka on the corner of Spring and Franklin Streets.

“Pulsing Waves” is by Shira Toren, an American-Israeli visual artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Born in Tel-Aviv, Shira moved to New York City to study fine art and design at the Pratt Institute and The New School, as well as The Art Students League.

Shira Toren’s work explores personal and global themes that reflect upon the environment. The abstract monochromatic paintings are process-oriented, using an eclectic method, uniquely developed by Toren, whereby she rubs graphite powder, pigments, and ink onto Venetian plaster substrates.

Toren offers, “I tend to toggle between additive and subtractive practices, masking certain layers while peeling away others, lending to an array of textures and pigments. The smooth Venetian plaster surface becomes inscribed with the dual actions of construction and deconstruction. Often the artwork exhibits bursts of energy alongside instances of stillness.”

Gallery Sitka owner, Tamar Russell Brown notes, “Since Shira exhibited with us in an Earth Day show, we were intrigued by her use of bright pigments and the organization of each of her pieces. Her work is hyper-organized in a way not often seen in abstract art. Shira also works in bodies of work which makes exhibiting a grouping very easy. Her work is easy on the eyes and smoothly fits into most interiors. For these reasons, we were happy to have her on as a represented Gallery Sitka artist. This is Shira’s first solo show with us and this is her second year under our representation. Gallery Sitka is thrilled to have her!”

Ms. Toren’s studio is in Red-Hook Brooklyn and she has exhibited in galleries and museums nationally and internationally.  Additional information on Shira Toren and her work can be found at Gallery Sitka – Shira Toren.
