“A is for Alice” by Colette A Shumate Smith

“In March I established my last paper layer on this current series. Searching for images and the love of the process is what moved me forward. Painting in a fury over texture, or in the snow began to establish the atmosphere underpainting. Ready for the end-game soon I add the figurative part. Perspective comes next. I am a watcher for the careful clues and hidden imagery. To bring out detail, the process takes time and simple development. I have been staring at this group for some time, hesitant to jump down the rabbit hole. For me this is an emotional journey into the unknown, a step into the dream world I call reality.

I ask the question “Is this simple life a dream? Or can it be a reality?” In a child’s imagination, reality can be a daydream, where everything is peaceful. Life is as it should be there.

In an effort to hide the gardener’s mistake of planting a white rose he paints them red. The Red Queen will say, “Off with his head.” “Thru The Looking Glass” is shown in these images. This moment from Alice in Wonderland’s Story is when objects float in space. Curiosity becomes a routine for Alice as she struggles to make sense of the topsy-turvy world. It is her perseverance and happy curiosity that I bring to my own Art.”
