HOPSCOTCH GAME OF WONDER
New Exhibit at Gallery Sitka/Newport

Opening Reception and Poetry Reading: Sat., August 5, 2-4pm, Open to all

‘Oneness’, 2023 by Jennifer Jean Okumura, Oil on Canvas, 48×48, 2023.

Newport, R.I., July 31, 2023 – Gallery Sitka announces a multimedia exhibition, reception, and poetry reading on Saturday, August 5 from 2-4pm. “Hopscotch Game of Wonder” will be on view at Gallery Sitka’s Newport location on the corner of Spring and Franklin Streets through August 21.

Hopscotch, layered with meaning, is imbued with physicality, psychology, entertainment, and challenge. This multimedia exhibition marks the grid in a child’s game of Hopscotch as a starting point. It quickly diverges into various topics, including play, gender, mathematics, philosophy, literature, and art history. Extending across cultures, continents, and time, hopscotch imagery was discovered in Ancient India and has been reported to have been used as endurance training for soldiers in the Roman Empire. The exhibition plays hopscotch by evoking movement and conveying a sense of passing through geographical areas or fields of endeavor.

Participating artists include award-winning dancer, poet, and writer Celeste Nazeli Snowber and author, poet, PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction finalist Nancy Agabian, along with visual artists Jennifer Jean Okumura, Jennifer Liston Munson, and Marsha Nouritza Odabashian.

This event celebrates the lyrical talents of our notable poets with Celeste and Nancy reading excerpts from their books. The three participating contemporary artists will speak for a few minutes on their pieces, sharing their distinctive voice and style in “Hopscotch”.

Co-curator Jennifer Jean Okumura describes the show, “‘Hopscotch’ reaches into the past, projects into the future, and radiates a range of textured emotions through experiences and push the envelope and bridge various artistic elements to make a well-rounded, dynamic show hopscotching through eternity.”

Gallery Sitka owner, Tamar Russell Brown notes, “We are excited to offer a dynamic reception to open “Hopscotch”. Thought-provoking, eye-catching, and colorful works in this exhibition explore cultures and the living/playing ‘now’ experiences. Created are works of strength, vision, beauty, and fun.”
