The title is taken from a George Jones song, which came to me via Elvis Costello. The song is sad and beautiful. It’s about beginnings and endings, as is the painting. It’s about days and nights, relationships; life itself, and the eternal beauty of it all. Like the rose, a life/relationships may contain the qualities of precious strength and fragility, sweet vibrancy and decay, soft beauty and thorns, and inevitable death, leaving seed for rebirth.
